Ots and Romsey 5ths entertained Overton 2nds on Saturday at Hunts Farm.
Overton put Romsey into bat after winning the toss, hoping to make use of the slightly overcast conditions. This seemed to be a good decision as Romsey soon found themselves in trouble at 24-4 including the prolific Hayes who played on in the first over. S Wood and S Roberts(19) steadied things with a good partnership before Roberts was stumped. A few overs later Wood’s long vigil ended when he was bowled for a well made 30. At 84-6 Romsey needed the tail to wag and Jordan(21) helped get the score to over 100 with a few runs from the rest, but spinner Heaver took 4 wickets at the end to leave Romsey 111 all out in 33 overs.
After a usual good standard tea Overton began their reply and the openers started steadily as Ots and Romsey strived for early wickets. It was young N Newman who took the first wicket bowling Lawrence in his first over. Romsey needed to get regular wickets if they were to make Overton nervous and indeed Newman and fellow spinner C. Stewart took 2 each as Overton reached 80-4. Opener Hoare(41*) however was standing firm at one end despite having several lives and Soone(26*) came in and chanced his arm with some leg side hitting and the pair took Overton to the victory target required in the 29th over. This condemned Romsey to a six wicket defeat in a game where the hosts were probably at least 50 runs short in the first innings to making this a closer match.
